Cops to use MMS to track criminals

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
BANGALORE : Imagine the Karnataka police transmitting pictures of suspects wirelessly to its branches across the state on a real-time via the Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) mobile handsets.

This can send timely alerts to the cops and enable them to take immediate action and hunt for the suspect, without having to wait for the picture to be brought in a police file.

Although it may sound futuristic, this is something that the cops here can really lay their hands as part of a demo.

TeleDNA, a wireless solutions company, has developed a prototype for the Karnataka police that helps put images of suspects on the network, enabling geographically dispersed police agents to have instant access to these pictures.

It can also help in tracing missing children.

According to Praveen Nallapothula, co-founder and CEO of TeleDNA, a Bangalore, India and US based corporation which has a research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore , as part of the demo, TeleDNA will create a closed user group by connecting the centralised wireless system installed at the Police head quarter in Bangalore to the various users.

For this, the company has to piggyback on the Spice Telecom's wireless network. Interestingly, TeleDNA has tied up with Spice for MMS service.

In addition to the closed user group, the police department can send alerts to the general public. TeleDNA is also talking to other states for this application.

Besides the application for the law enforcement agencies, TeleDNA in its development centre in Bangalore is building solutions for remote surveillance, remote healthcare and marketing.

According to Nallapothula, MMS is being viewed as the next generation SMS. The Indian operators such as Hutch, RPG in Chennai, Spice and BPL Mobile have already introduced MMS service.

AirTel is offering this on a trail basis. TeleDNA is also in talks with Reliance Infocomm to introduce MMS.

The cost of MMS-enabled phones has dropped dramatically with basic models being offered at a price tag of Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000.
