Cops to use MMS to track criminals:
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
BANGALORE : Imagine the Karnataka police transmitting pictures of suspects wirelessly to its branches across the state on a real-time via the Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) mobile handsets.
This can send timely alerts to the cops and enable them to take immediate action and hunt for the suspect, without having to wait for the picture to be brought in a police file.
Although it may sound futuristic, this is something that the cops here can really lay their hands as part of a demo.
TeleDNA, a wireless solutions company, has developed a prototype for the Karnataka police that helps put images of suspects on the network, enabling geographically dispersed police agents to have instant access to these pictures.
It can also help in tracing missing children.
According to Praveen Nallapothula, co-founder and CEO of TeleDNA, a Bangalore, India and US based corporation which has a research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore , as part of the demo, TeleDNA will create a closed user group by connecting the centralised wireless system installed at the Police head quarter in Bangalore to the various users.
For this, the company has to piggyback on the Spice Telecom's wireless network. Interestingly, TeleDNA has tied up with Spice for MMS service.
In addition to the closed user group, the police department can send alerts to the general public. TeleDNA is also talking to other states for this application.
Besides the application for the law enforcement agencies, TeleDNA in its development centre in Bangalore is building solutions for remote surveillance, remote healthcare and marketing.
According to Nallapothula, MMS is being viewed as the next generation SMS. The Indian operators such as Hutch, RPG in Chennai, Spice and BPL Mobile have already introduced MMS service.
AirTel is offering this on a trail basis. TeleDNA is also in talks with Reliance Infocomm to introduce MMS.
The cost of MMS-enabled phones has dropped dramatically with basic models being offered at a price tag of Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000.

MMS to help mobile cos raise revenues:
Glenayre Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS - News), announced today that the company's Versera® Multimedia Message Service center (MMSc version 2.0.4.0 and WAP gateway) and Versera IP- based Short Message Service center (SMSc version 2.0.4.0.) have successfully achieved interoperability approval from Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT; TSX). Compatibility approval was achieved using GSM 15 and GPRS 5.0 infrastructure equipment in Nortel Networks' Richardson, Texas Wireless Interoperability Lab.
Glenayre entered the MMSc market earlier this year when it announced a new, cost-effective MMS solution based on technology provided by TeleDNA. Today, Glenayre's portfolio includes cost-effective MMS solutions for operators that need a broad portfolio of exciting, content-rich services like picture messaging, maps and directions, stock charts and other visual applications which appeal to consumers, business users and the youth market.
The Versera MMS applications suite features multimedia messaging, greetings and photo album applications delivered on an open, standards-based MMSc. With Versera MMS, subscribers can compose, send, receive, save and delete MMS messages. Subscribers with multimedia terminals can view their messages on their handset, while non-MMS subscribers can view MMS messages online when they are sent an SMS with a web address directing them to the message for viewing.
Glenayre has also introduced an IP-based Versera SMSc based upon technology provided by TeleDNA. The scalability of this product allows it to function as an entry-level system for market trials or small deployments. The SMSc works seamlessly with all legacy SMS platforms, enabling operators to expand their existing SMS capabilities while laying a foundation for MMS services without significant capital investments.
Rolf Madson, senior vice president of marketing and business development for Glenayre, said, "Glenayre is pleased to bring to market a truly cost- effective MMS solution for operators. By leveraging the expertise we have developed as a leader in the messaging industry, we are able to offer carriers around the world the opportunity to expand and enhance their SMS and MMS offerings. Glenayre's IP-based SMSc and MMS portfolio provide a smooth evolution from legacy systems to the next generation of converged communications solutions."

The TeleDNA solution provides content storage, voice messaging over MMS, intelligent connectivity to e-mail, and rich push/pull applications among other services.
"At TeleDNA, we are excited and pleased to partner with an innovative operator like BPL Mobile to bring India`s first commercial MMS service. We are proud to be the first vendor to offer a total end-to-end MMS solution in India with a world-class MMSC developed for the first time in India. Commenting on TeleDNA as a technology partner, Mr. Cardoso said “In a very competitive market dominated by established big name MMSC vendors, BPL Mobile selected TeleDNA over several competitors due to the robustness, features and quality of the product, flexibility and lead response time in developing customized applications and excellent support.”
MMS has evolved from the Short Messaging Service (SMS), now mobile users will be able to use mobile phones with built-in cameras and sound-recording equipment to create their own multimedia messages, or retrieve ready-made graphics and sound from video-and-audio-banks either on-line or in their mobile phones. Given the phenomenal success of SMS, MMS is going the future of messaging. Riding on BPL Mobile’s GPRS network, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is the gigantic leap in messaging technology. A pre-requisite for delivering the real MMS experience, GPRS is today the corner stone of all new applications roll out plans of BPL Mobile.
Mr. F. B. Cardoso, President & CEO, BPL Mobile says, "SMS has taken the world by storm and we believe MMS, with its enhanced features, will enjoy similar success. As the saying goes, a photo speaks a thousand words. With the integration of the digital camera and the mobile phone, we expect to see high MMS usage from the forwarding of photo images. Self-generated content as well as content download, such as that of animated files and video clips in the near future, will also trigger a user`s desire to forward it to friends, thus creating a multiplier effect."
“The wide acceptance and usage of SMS has become so pervasive in our subscriber base, we are confident that MMS will bring greater value to mobile users, as well as a steady revenue stream for operators”, Mr. Cardoso added.
Built on open standards, TeleDNA's MMSC is easily integrated with existing applications and hardware on BPL Mobile`s infrastructure, allowing the operator to go to market in a short timeframe. Its architecture allows BPL Mobile to scale the system to meet the capacity, performance, reliability and budgetary requirements appropriate for each phase of the market life cycle, while it guarantees quality of service even at peak performance.

Interoperability testing completed successfully between Cisco's ITP (SS7 over IP gateway) and TeleDNA's IP SMSC:
A very critical step to reduce solution deployment time and cost for wireless carriers
TeleDNA, a wireless services product development company and Cisco Systems, a world leader in routing products have successfully completed interoperability testing between TeleDNA IP SMSC and Cisco's ITP (a SS7 over IP gateway). TeleDNA and Cisco will market this joint solution to provide IP based short messaging service center to mobile wireless carriers who are forecast to experience a huge increase in SMS traffic. To provide SMS, using traditional SS7 based SMS-Cs is an expensive proposition. By bypassing the SS7 networks, carriers can also gain capacity improvements, which can be utilized to serve more voice traffic.
TeleDNA's IP SMSC and Cisco's ITP communicate with each other using standards like SIGTRAN with SUA as the adaptation layer. The entire solution is built to provide very high scalability and capacity at a very low cost. |
